Mildred (Lady) Reaves Day Crafton

VALDOSTA — Mildred (Lady) Reaves Day Crafton, 89, of Pinetta, Fla., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 17, 2013.

Funeral service will be held at Pinetta Baptist Church on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. with interment in Barbara Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at Beggs Funeral Home.

Mildred was born in Alton, Va., on Oct. 3, 1923. She joined the Army in September 1944, after graduating from Pinetta High School. While in the Army, she met and later married Dean Donald Day. They had four children and lived in Phoenix, Ariz. After Dean’s death in 1963, she returned to Pinetta, Fla., where she renewed her nursing degree and raised her children. Mildred married Robert Lewis Crafton in 1986. He predeceased her in death.

Aside from being a devoted and loving mother to her own children, she was a foster parent to many children in Madison and surrounding counties and was the emergency foster home for years. These children benefited from her unconditional love, firm guidance, and she taught them how to have fun. Many other children in the community called her their second mom and continue to feel that way today.

She was devoted to her church and taught Sunday School for over 70 years. She was active in Bible School, GA’s, RA’s and many other youth activities in the church. She was an active volunteer in every community in which she lived.

She loved to garden and travel and combined the two by gathering seeds and plants from all her travel destinations. She enjoyed making quilts and pieced one for each member of her family, completing the last one in June of 2013. She was an ardent pen-pal and corresponded with friends and family all over the United States, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary.

She was the seventh child of 13 children and was the last surviving sibling of Elijah Isaac and Mildred Obiendiant Reaves.

She is survived by her four children, Edna McCormick, Doris Day, Dale Lilley and Clyde Day; daughter-in-law, Ruth Day; two sons-in-law, Tom Lilley and David Hattam; five grandchildren, Michael Lilley, Brian Conner, Suzanna Barnette, Kristi Lilley Davis, Jason Day; and eight great-grandchildren, David Young, Summer Rosa Barnette, Dakota Conner, Deena Davis, Ashley Conner, Everest Rosa Barnette, Conor Thomas Lilley and Gavin Todd Conner.  — Beggs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements (850) 973-2258.
