Mary Alice McKinney, 66, of Lake Park, Ga. passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at South Georgia Medical Center. Mary was born 66 years ago in Washington, D.C. and lived in numerous places as one of four daughters of a U.S. Naval Officer. Her residences included Spain, Morocco, Kansas, Maine, and Virginia. She earned a degree in nursing at DePaul in Norfolk and studied at several universities in Maryland, Virginia, and California. Her final degree was earned in Enterostomal Therapy after which she joined the staff of Emory University Hospital where she remained until her marriage in 1980. The remainder of her life was spent as a loving homemaker devoted to her family and friends.
Mary joined the Catholic Church at an early age. Her courage and faith sustained her through a long and painful battle with multiple sclerosis. She was a very intellectual person with a particular interest in the literature of the spiritual thinkers.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, James McKinney of Lake Park; and two children, James Paul McKinney and Helen Lee McKinney of Valdosta. She is also survived by her father, Cdr. Paul Gallagher of Alexandria, Va.; and three sisters, Paula Robertson of Lawrenceville, Ga., Patricia Morris of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Ann Swift of Richmond, Va. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Elkins Gallagher.
Mary will be interred in the McKinney lot of Sparks Cemetery in Sparks, Ga. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 14, 2013. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the B.A.R.C.
