Elizabeth Joy (Lizzie) Lohmar

VALDOSTA — Elizabeth Joy (Lizzie) Lohmar, 21, of Lawrenceville, passed away Feb. 8, 2014, from injuries sustained in a Feb. 5 auto-pedestrian accident in Valdosta.

Lizzie was born in Englewood, Colo., on Aug. 24, 1992, before moving to Lawrenceville with her family in January 1994. She was a 2010 graduate of Collins Hill High School, in Suwanee, where she achieved academic and athletic honors as a member of the state-champion cross-country and state-qualifier soccer teams.

At Valdosta State University, she majored in mathematics and was treasurer in the local chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. Lizzie was an active member of the Kappa Beta chapter of Phi Mu sorority, where she served as corresponding secretary and treasurer. She played for the university’s inaugural NCAA intercollegiate women’s soccer team and volunteered as an assistant soccer coach at Hahira Middle School.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Earle and Kathleen Moss of Orange Park, Fla.; and paternal grandparents, James and Patricia Lohmar of Richardson, Texas.

Lizzie is survived by her parents, Peter and Margery Lohmar of Lawrenceville; brother, James Lohmar of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Sarah Lohmar and fiancé Shawn Berglund of Valdosta; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Special thanks to the ICU staff at South Georgia Medical Center, the VSU Administration, the young women of Phi Mu sorority, and many other students and friends.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31602. Requiem Mass will be said at 11 a.m., today, Feb. 12, 2014, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 800 Gornto Road, Valdosta, GA 31602.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Elizabeth Joy Lohmar Scholarship Fund for Mathematics, care of VSU Foundation, 1500 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31698.
