Hartford Wetherington, 72, of Valdosta died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at Langdale Hospice House. He was born on Feb. 14, 1931 in Mayday, Ga., and was the son of Ollie Hartford Wetherington and Amy Turner Wetherington. Mr. Wetherington was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1953. Mr. Wetherington attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of Perimeter Road Baptist Church and a former member of Lee Street Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Mr. Wetherington worked for Firestone Tire for eighteen years, first here in Valdosta in 1954 upon his discharge from the Air Force and ended his career from Firestone as store manager in Brunswick. He then moved back to Valdosta and was co owner of Garvin and Wetherington Tire Company until his retirement.
Mr. Wetherington is survived by his wife, Joyce Flowers Wetherington of Valdosta whom he married on Dec. 16, 1951. He is also survived by his son, Mike Wetherington of Hilton Head, S.C.; three grandsons, Michael Wetherington, Ryan Wetherington and Kyle Wetherington; his sister, Bonnie Tomlinson Parker of Fayetteville, N.C.; and his brother, Gary Wetherington of Bluffton, S.C. Mr. Wetherington is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Brona Garvin.
Mr. Wetherington was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was a very benevolent man, a man of his word and a friend to all.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 18, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Sunset Hill Cemetery with Pastor Wayne Dorsett officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Langdale Hospice, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602.
