Sybil Jane Hattaway Tomlinson

VALDOSTA — Sybil Jane Hattaway Tomlinson, 87, passed away, Monday, June 9, 2014, at the Clinch Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Tomlinson was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Waycross, Ga. to the late Emory Floyd Hattaway and Maybel Mosley Hattaway. She retired from the City of Homerville as the City Clerk in 1989, and was a member of the Homerville First Baptist Church, where she had served as Chairperson of the Social Committee and sang in the choir. She was a past member of the Exchange Club and loved being outside and working in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Tomlinson Sr.; two brothers, Emory Floyd Hattaway Jr., and Billy Hattaway; two sisters, Isabelle Keaton and Florine Harrison.  Survivors are one daughter, Janice Tomlinson Griffis, Homerville; one son and daughter-in-law, Ray Jr. and Betty Tomlinson, Sana Rosa Shore, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, M.D. “Dewitt” and Mary Ellen Hattaway, Waycross; three grandchildren, Jonathon and Julie Tomlinson, Covington, La., Kayla Griffis, Homerville, Matt and Marlie Swensen, Labelle, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren, Olivia Tomlinson, Isabella Tomlinson, Aubre Jane Tomlinson, Braxtyn Smith, Aliyah Smith, Matthew Swensen and Marci Swensen; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tomlinson will be held Thursday, June 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Homerville First Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Arabia Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today and at the home of Kayla Griffis, 195 Old Pearson Road, Homerville, GA 31634. Mrs. Tomlinson will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services.
