Shirley A. Dean Butler, 77, of Quitman, Ga., died Friday, May 16, 2014 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Dothan, Ala., on Aug. 5, 1936 to the late Sam and Dovie Lee Kent Allday and had lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Butler was a Baptist and attended Hickory Head Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, gardening, sewing and reading. Mrs. Butler retired from Quitman Manufacturing as a supervisor and had also been employed with the Chevron/Suwanee Swifty in Statenville.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Barbara and Larry Franklin of Valdosta, Debra and Danny Hall of Quitman, Patricia Smithie of Madison, Fla., Dovie and Kevin Carter of Haughton, La.; five grandchildren, Michael Smithie, David Smithie, Samantha Sager, Crystal Harris, Chris (Reagan) Hall, 10 great-grandchildren, Christopher Hill, Shane Smithie, Chance Smithie, Dieago Lee, Ivlisse Lee, Caleb Hall, Ethan Hall, Shelby Carter and Harlee Carter; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Wylene Holland of Dothan, Ala., Frankie and Donna Townsell of Waterloo, Ala., Dewey and Sheila Townsell of Pueblo, Colo.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vannie Mercer of Cottonwood, Ala. and Imegene and Curtis Machen of Dothan, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin L. Butler, a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Dean and three brothers, David Allday, Talmadge Allday, Tommy Powell and a sister, Sarah Wright.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2014 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Hutto and Pastor John O’Neil officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. The family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
