VALDOSTA — Dr. Louie Anderson Brown, Professor Emeritus, Valdosta State University, entered the Church Triumphant on Monday, May 12, 2014. He was the son of the late Jack Brown and Helen Hembree Brown Hughes. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, E.J. Hughes.

Born in Hartwell, Ga., in 1933, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.  Dr. Brown was a graduate of Piedmont College, earned a M.A. degree from The University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky.  During his career, he was on the faculty at East Tennessee University, Appalachian State University, and Valdosta State University where he chaired the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice. He retired from VSU in 1995, as Vice President of Academic Affairs.  He was a gifted leader with a generous heart and a peaceful spirit.

Dr. Brown was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, the Cornerstone Class, Athens Area Retired Educators Association, Classic City Rotary Club and numerous professional organizations and associations. He served as president of Valdosta Rotary Club in 2001, and Rotary Lt. Gov. of District 6920 in 2002. He was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, Will Watt Fellow and Rotary Benefactor.  His life emulated the Rotary “Service Above Self.”

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Frances Collins Brown; two half-sisters, Ann Voss of Perry, Ga., and Barbara Godfrey of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Ann Wilkins (Thomas) of Athens, Ga., Willie Wilkinson (Shelton) of Toccoa, Ga., and Jimmie Carroll (David) of Toccoa, Ga.; devoted goddaughters, Kathy Holmes of Carrollton, Texas, Sharon Krumpe, Ph.D. of Smithfield, Va., and Susan Graham, J.D. of Edmond, Okla.; nieces, nephews, and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins, all of whom he dearly loved.

The family would like to express appreciation and thanks to the dedicated caregivers, Teresa Ware, Jamie Bailey, and UniHealth Post-Acute Care/Athens Heritage for the kindness, love, and support given to Louie.

Services for Dr. Brown will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014, in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Stephens Memorial Gardens in Toccoa, Ga. at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the VSU Foundation, Sociology Department Scholarship Fund, Valdosta State University, 1500 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31698.
