Rev. George Henry Reid was born on Feb. 9, 1933 to Alonzo and Elma Reid in the Colon Republic of Gatun, Panama. Reverend Reid graduated from Rainbow City High School in Canal Zone, Panama.
In 1963, Mr. Reid enlisted in the Army and completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was honorably discharged. He met and married Teresa Johnson. This union was blessed with one son Alonzo (Lonnie) Reid in Metuchin, N.J.
Reid later relocated to Valdosta with the Gulton Corporation in 1977.
He also worked with Joseph Foods, SAFT Industries and owned a cobbler shop on the west end of town. After years of service as a deacon in Metuchin and Valdosta, he received the call to the ministry in 1980. Rev. Reid was ordained by the late W.H. Ross, Sr. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Macedonia Baptist Church was home of his first pasturing position. He later helped found Thessalonian Baptist Church. He later returned to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and served until his health prevented him from service.
He married Cora Felton Reid on April 1, 2010, who cared for him until his death. Rev. Reid, lovingly known as “Poppy”, “Puerto” or “Grandpa” was adopted as a second dad and grandfather to Cora’s children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Elma Reid; his first wife, Teresa Reid; and son, Alonzo (Lonnie) Reid; a sister, Mary Flemings; two brothers, Clifford and Arnold Reid; his second wife, LeJeune Reid; step-daughter, Toller Reynae Henderson.
Rev. Reid leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Mrs. Cora Reid of Valdosta; his step-children, Loran Johnson of Valdosta, Bridgett (Kenneth) Smith of West Palm Beach, Fla., Montinez Henderson, Kimberly (Louis) Gordon and Lynn (Willie) Williams, all of Valdosta; one brother, Clarence Young of Lanham, Md.; one sister: Etta Jones of Lanham, Md.; a special niece, Patsy Warr of Washington, D.C.; nine nieces; five nephews; Also a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 3 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Aaron Hopkins, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home, Valdosta
