Eugene McCloud

-- — Eugene McCloud, affectionately called “Genie” was born on April 28, 1931 in Tampa, Fla. to the late Phoebe Jones and James McCloud. At the age of 15 his family migrated to Valdosta, Ga. where he attended Dasher High School. When he became of age, Genie entered into the United States Army where he served in the Korean War.

After his tour of duty in the Army, Eugene returned to Valdosta where he began to perfect his natural ability to do landscaping. He would spend the rest of his healthy life beautifying Valdosta by utilizing his God given talent. A gentle spirit, Eugene was a soft spoken, laid back man who could be seen at any given time navigating the city via bicycle that he rode well into his seventies.  He lived a care free life and though he never married and had no biological children, he had many who loved and admired him like a father. During his final leg of his journey, Eugene opened his heart and arms and embraced Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior; a decision that excited both he and his family and secured his place with the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his memories his nieces and nephews, Linda Akins (John) of Valdosta, Shirley Wallo of Warner Robins, Richard Bricker (Emma) of Lithonia, Donna McCloud-Johnson of Stone Mountain, George VanAmson (Wendy) of New York, N.Y., Edmond Smarr and Sandra Smarr of Los Angeles, Calif. and Carl Harris of Valdosta; also a host of other great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and church family members.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 2 p.m. at First Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. The  Rev. Albert L. Barfield, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Public viewing will be held today from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Saturday, March 30, 2013 from 9-12 Noon at the funeral home. — Stevens Funeral Home of Valdosta
