Pauline Smith Kennedy

VALDOSTA — Pauline Smith Kennedy of Jasper, Fla., passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014, at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center in Jasper, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Jasper First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper.

The family will receive friends on today between the hours of 5-7 p.m. at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, Fla.

Mrs. Kennedy was born in Comer, Ga., on Sept. 9, 1915, to Benjamin and Anna Augusta Simmons Smith. Pauline had one brother, Robert Earl Smith, five half brothers and three half sisters (all deceased).

Pauline graduated Valedictorian of her class from Comer High School. She went on to attend the University of Georgia where she met and married Waldo Smith in 1935. He accepted a position with the Department of Forestry and after living in several small towns in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, they settled in Homerville. Just a few short years later in March of 1944, Mr. Smith passed away suddenly, leaving her with two small sons. Through a mutual friend of the family, Pauline was introduced to Cecil Allen Kennedy and following a brief courtship, she married Cecil who was willing to take on her small family as his own through adoption. In 1946, they moved from Homerville to Hamilton County where they made their home until his death in 1975. Upon moving to Jasper, Pauline returned to school and graduated with a teaching degree from Valdosta State University. Her teaching career spanned over 30 years.

Mrs. Kennedy was a good and faithful servant. She was a long-time member of Jasper First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School and served on many committees over the years. She did so because she took particular interest in watching her church family grow. Mrs. Kennedy hosted and co-hosted showers and teas for many of the young brides in the community. Her Southern grace and hospitality was an inspiration to young women who aspired to be the Christian wife and mother they saw in her.

When her health declined and she moved to Suwannee Valley Nursing Center, her ministry continued. She was an encourager, always lifting others up in words and in prayer.  She was content with her life and considered herself blessed to be able to live out her 98 years surrounded by people who loved her.

Mrs. Kennedy was predeceased by her husbands, Waldo Smith and Cecil A. Kennedy; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ellis Kennedy.

She is survived by her two sons, Waldo Smith Kennedy and his wife Florence “Ricki” Ellis Kennedy of Jasper, Fla., and Dr. Benjamin Smith Kennedy and his wife Sally Ireland Kennedy of Boca Raton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Benjamin Smith Kennedy Jr. and his wife Teri, Waldo Allen Kennedy and his wife Menieca, Peter Todd Kennedy and his wife Lisa Marie, Adrienne Pauline Kennedy Haag and her husband David, and Cecilia Ann Kennedy McMillan and her husband Timothy; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Teachers Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund, 207 NE 2ND Street, Jasper, FL 32052. — Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, Jasper, FL, is in charge of arrangements.
