VALDOSTA — Funeral services for Roy Alford Spradley, 83, of Lufkin, Texas will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Timberland Drive Church of Christ in Lufkin, Texas with Harold Hancock and Jeff Spradley officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Spradley was born August 4, 1929 in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late Bay and Genevieve (Alford) Spradley, and died Sunday, October 14, 2012, in a local hospital. He resided in Angelina County, Texas most of his life and was an Elder at Timberland Drive Church of Christ.

Mr. Spradley graduated from Nacogdoches High School. He worked in accounting at the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, where he served in the Honor Guard. Upon returning from the Army, he resumed his job at Southern Pacific and enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University. While at SFA, he was a member of the Accounting Club, served as the president of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, and taught lab classes in the Biology Department. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Spradley began his career at Axley & Rode, CPAs in Lufkin, Texas. He retired in 1991, after 28 years of service as Director of Internal Audit for Temple Inland in Diboll, Texas. He was a past President of the Ark-La-Tex Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Roy Spradley loved Christ, his family, his friends and his community.  He worked in his church with an unwavering commitment for over 48 years.  He was an exemplary husband and father. With Glenda, he raised Jeff and Lori through his knowledge of and love for Christ and his teachings. He remained faithful to his friends and church congregants throughout his life and was an active member of the Angelina Arts Alliance and the Lufkin community. Roy will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Glenda Spradley of Lufkin, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Patti Spradley of Lake Park, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Chuck Haney of Humble, Texas; grandchildren, Ashley Mays and husband John, Charlie and Zach Haney; great-grandchildren, Maggie and Jaiden Mays; mother-in-law, Elsie Tee Rudd of Center, Texas; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara Spradley of Lufkin, Texas and Bobbie and Ray Smiley of Houston, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Diana Rudd of Dallas, Texas; and nephews and nieces, Kyle Spradley and wife Valena of Lufkin, Texas, Barry Rudd, Matt Rudd, both of Dallas, Texas, Gina McMahon of Houston, Texas, Jill Taylor and husband Greg of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Roxann Ellis of Lufkin, Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Spradley and Bobby Spradley; and father-in-law, Roy Rudd.

Pallbearers will be Mike Penn, Kyle Spradley, Barry Rudd, Matt Rudd, Jim Ulmer and Tim Beamon. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Haney, Zach Haney, John Mays, John Adams, Leon Manning, Joe Smitherman, Joe Penn, Monte Ramsey, David Duren, Fred Hutson, Joe Ruby, Greg Taylor and Larry Spradley.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Carroway Funeral Home, Lufkin, Texas.
