Aubrey Monroe Robinson Jr.

-- — Aubrey Monroe Robinson Jr. died in his sleep Oct.8, 2011 at his home on Azalea Drive in Valdosta, Ga. During his lengthy battle with Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease he never complained, was always optimistic and ever hopeful.

Known as “Buddy” by his family and “Robbie” to his friends, he was born in Statesville, N.C. on Sept. 8, 1930; graduated from Statesville High School; attended the University of Oklahoma and George Washington University before joining the Air Force. He married Janet Wasson of Statesville, N.C. in 1954 and they had a son, Aubrey III (Robin) and daughter Patricia Clarice (Patti). After being stationed at numerous bases in the States, and completing an assignment in France, Robbie was stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia in 1964. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam where he logged nearly 200 hours of combat time flying 78 combat missions.

Robbie loved his family, his friends and his country. After retirement from the Air Force he worked for Barr Wholesale Jewelers then the Georgia Head Start Association. He completed his education at Valdosta State University, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

He was a staunch supporter of the Valdosta State Athletics and Fine Arts Departments and was also involved in the Community Theatre. He was the most supportive husband that the Valdosta Garden Club has ever seen. The Robinson family became members of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church in 1970, with Robbie serving on various committees. Robbie was a member of the Order of Daedalians, the American Legion, Stone Creek Golf Club, the POETS Club, and was happy to take his wife to the Tea Dance Club.  He loved golf and tennis and flying, but was not too great on yard work.

Robbie is survived by his wife Janet; daughter Patti Goins; son-in-law Andy; and grandsons Drew and Zach of Weddington, NC; and brother Arthur J. Robinson of Columbia, SC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Kimberly Burgess and her daughter Aubrey and son Evan of Apex, NC; Joe and Heather Robinson and their children Zoe, Reed and Piper of Alpharetta, GA. Surviving cousins include Tom Robinson of Bradenton, Fla., DeeDee and Brad Dawson of Asheville, N.C. and James Robinson and family of Canberra Australia.  Brother-in-law, Jim Wasson of Myrtle Beach, SC along with his daughter Lenora and her husband Adam Sparks of High Point, N.C.  Robbie leaves many dearly loved relatives and friends scattered throughout the world that will miss him as they continue to celebrate his life.

The family will have visitation at their Azalea Drive residence on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 from 6-8  p.m. Parking is available at both neighboring homes. A Military burial service is being arranged by Nicholson Funeral Home for Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Oakwood Cemetery Robinson family plot in Statesville, NC.
