Helen Mildred Smith Alcorn

VALDOSTA — Helen Mildred Smith Alcorn, 90, of Valdosta, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at the Lakehaven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born on Oct. 2, 1923, in Enigma, Ga., to Charlie Paul and Mamie Ira (Abel) Smith. She graduated from Enigma High School and also graduated from Georgia Southwestern College. She worked in a war factory in Macon during WWII. Her father served as the Enigma Postmaster and when he had a heart attack, she stepped up to take on his responsibilities. First and foremost, she was an amazing wife, mother, granny and servant of Jesus. She was a charter member of Greenwood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, husband Cecil Alcorn; three brothers, and five sisters.

Her survivors include three daughters, Gail and Jimmy Dudley of White, Ga., Erika and Kent Parks of Plano, Texas, Sylvia and Bert Crowe of Tifton; two sons, Gerald and Linda Alcorn of Jonesboro, Ga.; Tony Alcorn of Valdosta; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sisters, Imogene Gates of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Naomi Overby of Duluth, Ga.; sister-in-law, Joyce Stevenson of Nashville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial to follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to United Hospice Foundation, 407 Cowart Ave., Valdosta, GA 31602.
