Edwin L. Lunsford, loving husband and father died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006.
Mr. Lunsford and his family have lived all over the world due to his position as a diplomat for the State Department of the U.S. Government as well as working at the Nevada Test Site. Mr. Lunsford will be missed by all those that came to know and love him.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine S. Lunsford of Evanston, Wyo.; and his four children, Linda S. Lunsford of Berwick, Maine; Cary L. Lunsford of Whittier, Calif.; Barbara Childs of Valdosta; and Brenda L. Lunsford of San Diego, Calif. Mr. Lunsford also has nine grandchildren that survives him as well as his brother, Jon Lunsford of Evanston, Wyo.

Jack Franklin Howell
Jack Franklin Howell, 77, of Hahira passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born on Feb. 3, 1929, in Lowndes County to the late Joseph Franklin and Erie Folsom Howell and was a lifelong resident of Hahira. Mr. Howell graduated from Hahira High School in 1947, and was a retired dispatcher with the Hahira Police Department. He attended the Salem United Methodist Church and was an avid outdoorsman with an interest in wildlife conservation and forestry.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Grace Thomas Howell of Hahira; four children and their spouses, Pat and John Murchison of Woodstock, Sherry and Gordon Sale of Danville, Ky., Lane and Danny Cashwell of Hahira, Greg Howell of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Faren Hart, Patrick Murchison, Lee Sale, Leslie Sale, Dei Cashwell, Lindsey Cashwell, Gregory Howell Jr. and Megan M. Howell; four great-grandchildren, Zoie Hart, Phoebe Hart, Alex Murchison and Mollie Murchison; one sister, Johnnie Lou New of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucy Bland, Dorothy Nash and Annie Laura Bell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, in the chapel of Martin/McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Houseal officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Leisa Norvell Ross
Leisa Norvell Ross passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, in Highlands, N.C. She was born in Norfolk, Va., 1958. She was reared and attended school in Charleston, S.C. Leisa was a successful sales associate with City Plumbing and Electric in Rabun Gap. Her greatest joys in this life were her surviving children, Susan and Bernie Dahlberg of Los Angeles, Calif., and her very special friend, Manuel de Juan of Highlands, N.C. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Ann Ross; and her brother, Hugh Dean Ross.
She is survived by her father, E. Gayle Ross; stepmother, Joanne Ross; sister, Lynne Ross Pounders; brothers, Edwin Ross and David Ross; and stepsister, Deirdre Warlick. She was greatly loved by her nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Nancy Alfa Swain
Nancy Alfa Swain, 92, of Nashville passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Berrien Nursing Center.
She was born on Dec. 23, 1913, in Berrien County to the late Abner and Sara Hendley Sirmons. She was a homemaker and member of Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church. She was the widow of Launie Swain who died May 12, 1999.
She is survived by two daughters, Laquietta Griffin and Sara Faye Jones, both of Nashville; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Connell and Ruth Norris, both of Nashville; and one brother, Lucious Sirmons of Valdosta.

James Edward Carter
James Edward Carter, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Thomasville on Oct. 9, 2006, with his family at his bedside. Mr. Carter was born on Jan. 6, 1932, in Grady County to the late Jim and Mable Carter. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Pelham. Mr. Carter was a veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery in Action. He spent 33 months in a Korean Prison Camp and was released in the Prisoner Exchange in 1953.
Mr. Carter worked for the City of Valdosta for 20 years and retired as superintendent of wastewater treatment in September 1990. He was a member of the Pelham Jamboree where he made many friends and he and June enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights for many years.
Mr. Carter is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, June Snipes Carter; one daughter, Carla Bradshaw (John), Pelham; one grandson, John Carter Bradshaw, Pelham; one sister, Grace Carter Cooley (Joe), Graceville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held today, Oct. 11, 2006, from 6-8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home, Cairo. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, with the Rev. Homer Croft officiating. — Clark Funeral Home, Cairo

Ruby Eloie Branam
Ruby Eloie Branam, 78, of Valdosta, died on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. Born in Kimbrough, in Webster County, on Nov. 24, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Elizabeth Singleton Troutman. Mrs. Branam graduated from Jones County High School in 1945, and the Macon Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She was a retired State of Georgia nursing instructor, a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of Perimeter Road Baptist Church.
Mrs. Branam’s accomplishments led her to be entered into Personalities of the South, The American Biographical Institute, 12th Edition, located in the Library of the Congress. Personalities of the South supports the continuing traditions of recognizing efforts and documentation of valuable biographical facts of those individuals who contribute to all levels of Southern development and reflect the leadership of this region in fields of professional, civic, cultural, religious, governmental, personal, scientific and educational endeavors. Mrs. Branam’s family was blessed because she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors are three sons and two daughters, James W. Jr. and Sally Branam of Macon, R. Darrell and Sandy Branam of Valdosta, M. Duane and Vickie Branam of Milledgeville, Sheila E. Branam of Maui, Hawaii, and Sharon B. and Richard Faber of Valdosta; six grandchildren, Monica B. and Ted Peeples, Hilary T. Branam, Joshua C. Branam, Stephanie A. Branam and Allen McGee, Angie K. Faber and J. Rocky Faber; two great-grandchildren, Mica S. Branam and Dunham M. Peeples; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Branam was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James W. Branam Sr.; and her brother, Thomas J. Troutman Jr.

Alice Broome Wooten Dorminey
Alice Broome Wooten Dorminey, 96, of Valdosta passed away Monday evening, Oct. 9, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 8, 1910, to the late Willie Sanford Broome and Rachael Eleanor Broome. She attended the first Valdosta public schools. She was the first woman hired for civilian work at Moody Air field in 1941. She retired from W.T. Grant Company in 1972. She was a charter member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. Grandma would always send greeting cards for different occasions to all church members and friends. This led to her being known as the “Sunshine girl.” She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers; Clyde “Fatty,” Jesse, Thomas and Chester Broome, and a stepdaughter, Catherine Dorminey Simpson. Her first Husband, A.L. Wooten and her late husband Pearlie Dorminey (formerly with VPD) also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Buddy and Mary-Helen Dorminey, Waycross, Jimmy and Theresa Dorminey, Valdosta; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Betty and Jim Dubberley, Kissimmee, Fla.; eight stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three loving and devoted friends, Joann Welton, Tonya Pierson and Vickie Burt.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Baptist Church with Pastor Jimmy Burt officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Archie Albert Frier
Archie Albert Frier was born June 2, 1939, in Jasper, Fla., to Olive Albert Frier and Mary Lou Arnold Frier. Archie accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age. As a teenager, Archie served as youth evangelist for the Churches of God in North Florida and pastored several churches. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from General Motors. He served as Minister of Visitation and Outreach at First Baptist Church in Titusville, Fla., for a number of years. Archie was a long-time host and producer of “Sounds of Southern Gospel” on WQHL radio in Live Oak, Fla. He was awarded the “Golden Microphone Award” in 1997 by Singing News Magazine and the “Golden Crown Award” in 2000. He was well known throughout South Georgia and the Suwannee River Valley Area for his love and support of Southern Gospel Music.
A man of strong faith, Archie went to be with the Lord on Oct. 9, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Boatwright Frier; his children, Jonathan and Magy Frier, Atlanta, Kevin and Meredith Lancaster, Valdosta; his grandchildren, Brandon Swift, Caleb Helms, Andrea Frier, Matthew Frier, Katie Lancaster, Rebecca Lancaster. Archie is also survived by his brothers, Bobby and Helen Frier, Shelton and Joan Frier, Rusty Weatherington; and his sisters, Louise and Gurdine Stanley and Dorothy Smith, all from Valdosta. He was loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Archie was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister, Linda Crouch Wetherington; brothers-in-law, Bobby Smith Sr. and Joe Crouch; and nephew, Bobby Smith Jr.
Archie’s family and friends will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather and a loyal friend. Most of all, he loved his Lord Jesus Christ and was a member of First Baptist Church of Port St. John, Fla. Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Azalea City Church of God in Valdosta followed by a Home Going Celebration Gospel Music Concert from 7:30-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006. Burial will be at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Hahira, on Friday, Oct. 13, 2006.
