Thomas Addison Harnage

Thomas Addison Harnage, 68, passed away at his residence in Hahiraon Sept. 28, 2007, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He gave a good fight, as all soldiers do.

He was born March 25, 1939, in Valdosta to the late Maston Henry Harnage Sr. and Pearl (Mullis) Harnage Hill. At 19, he joined the National Guard and later served in the U.S. Air Force, as well as the U.S. Army, where he saw service in England, Okinawa, Thailand and Germany, and did two tours in Vietnam, the latter as a helicopter pilot.

After 15 years of service to his country and rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Office 2, he returned home to Valdosta, where he worked for the Georgia Department of Corrections as a vocational instructor for 30 years. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University at the age of 42 and retired from Valdosta State Prison in July 2001 at 62.

Mr. Harnage was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Adel since 1977, where he served one term as president of the Parish Council and was a lay reader and Eucharistic minister. Prior to St. Margaret’s, he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Valdosta from 1971 to 1977. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Jane (Bowles) Harnage; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Lisa Harnage of Grayson and Kenneth and Brigitte Harnage of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Trisha Johnston of Hahira; daughter and son-in-law, Kristine and David Phillips of Suwanee; three grandchildren, Shannon Hollingshead of Las Vegas, Nev., Jarrett Johnston of Hahira and Mary Katharine Phillips of Suwanee; a twin brother and sister-in-law, Joseph Madison Harnage Sr. and Alicia Harnage of Albuquerque, N.M.; a younger brother and sister-in-law, Maston Henry Harnage Jr. and Cornelia Harnage of Hayesville, N.C.; his beloved mother-in-law, Frances Bowles of Independence, Mo.; six sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-laws: Marilyn Olson of Blue Springs, Mo., Kay and John Longwith of Independence, Mo., Evaughn and Donald Cox of Buffalo, Mo., Dr. Joseph and Michelle Bowles of Prairieville, La., Connie and Jerry Evans of Kansas City, Mo., and Suzanne and Michael Hook of Kansas City, Mo.; two aunts and one uncle, Betty and Earl Bryan of Adel and Bernice Harnage of Plant City, Fla.; and 27 nieces and nephews, 30 great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous cousins in both the Harnage and Mullis families.

His favorite pastimes were camping, fishing and church gatherings. He loved family and adored his grandchildren, who always put a special twinkle in his eye. The family would like to give special thanks to the Pearlman Cancer Center at South Georgia Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, 1706 S. Hutchinson Ave., Adel, Ga.

A Rosary service will be held at 5 p.m. prior to visitation. Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Hwy. 41 South.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at the funeral home chapel, with Father Fredy Angel of St. Margaret’s in Adel officiating and Monsignor Marvin LeFrois of St. John’s in Valdosta assisting. Committal services with military honors will be held at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home.

Burney Mack Harmon Jr.

Burney Mack Harmon, Jr., 76, of Valdosta departed this life at home after a lengthy illness on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007.

Mr. Harmon was born in Mobile, Ala., on July 10, 1931, to the late Mary Edwards and the late B.M. Harmon Sr. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1953. He retired from the State of Georgia Department of Labor on Jan. 31, 1982, with 34 years service. At the time of his retirement he was the youngest person to retire from the State of Georgia with full benefits. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 13.
