VALDOSTA — A 5-year-old boy drowned at a Quality Inn in Valdosta late Sunday evening.
According to the Valdosta Police Department, police arrived at the motel on West Hill Avenue around 9 p.m. to find the child unresponsive. The report states several good Samaritans were already performing CPR on the child when officials arrived.
Paramedics took over and transported the child to the hospital. The child was later pronounced dead, the report states.
VPD said a crime scene was established and a criminal investigation was started. This is standard procedure in any case of this nature, according to VPD.
Valdosta Police Person’s Crimes Detectives, Crime Scene Technicians from the Valdosta/Lowndes Regional Crime Lab and the Lowndes County Coroners office responded to help in the investigation, the report states.
Police learned a local family was staying at the motel for a birthday party. There were around 25 people at the party, the report states. The child was last seen sitting near the side of the pool about five minutes before someone noticed he was no longer present, according to the report.
The child was next seen underwater near the bottom of the pool, the report states.
Valdosta Police Detectives are working with the coroner’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner in the investigation. The cause of death appears to be drowning at this point, authorities said.
The name of the child and the family are being withheld until additional family members can be notified.
