Cooks leaves Pelham victorious

Pelham — The Cook County Hornets (3-3,1-2) earned the team's first region win of the season Friday night, using a stifling defensive effort to knock off the Pelham Hornets (3-3,0-2)19-0.

Cook broke the scoreless tie early in the second quarter, using a six yard pass from quarterback Connor Hilliard to wideout Jeremy Walden to cap off the touchdown drive.

The score turned out to be all Cook would need, as the Hornets stifled Pelham's one-dimensional offense time after time for the entire game.

Pelham, who averages only 24 yards per game through the air, simply could not move the football on Cook's defense.

Just six minutes after Cook got on the board, the Hornets struck again, this time with a rushing touchdown from back Jalen Bennett.

In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Cook turned in the longest play of the game, a 45-yard strike from Hilliard to Trey Jackson, to stretch the lead to 19-0.

Cook moves to 1-2 in region 1-AA with the victory and will travel to Louisville, Georgia next Friday night for a non-region contest with Jefferson County.

The Hornets next region game is against first-place Brooks County in Adel on Oct. 25.

The loss for Pelham is the team's third consecutive defeat.  The Hornets remain winless in region 1-AA and will travel to Quitman next week to take on the Brooks County Trojans, who are currently unbeaten in region play.
