Weekend basketball takes over the city

VALDOSTA — It was a weekend of basketball in Valdosta, with Valdosta High and Georgia Christian both playing in games on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night, the Valdosta High Wildcats boys team defeated the Cook Hornets 74-47 in Adel. The leading scorer was Rashad Lewis with 22 points, followed by Tre Barrett with 15 points. Lewis had four rebounds, three steals, five assists and one turnover as he led the Wildcats to a victory.

Barrett and Ken McGee tied the team lead for rebounds with eight a piece, followed by Dakari Carter with five. Barrett also had five steals and hit three three-pointers in the contest.

“He (Lewis) played well. He took good shots and was efficient. He really played hard on defense. He’s our senior leader and has been playing great so far,” said Wildcat Head Coach Antonio Haynes.

Also on Friday, the Georgia Christian Generals took on the Valwood Valiants, with both girls and boys junior varsity and varsity teams taking the court.

The JV girls of Georgia Christian pulled off a win 33-16, while the JV boys lost to Valwood 43-7.

The varsity girls got a win over the Valiants, winning 56-40. The varsity boys team for the Generals won 61-32.

Saturday saw the Wildcats and Generals take the court once more, with the Generals at their home gym, while the ‘Cats traveled to Quitman.

The Generals celebrated their Homecoming by taking on Tiftarea Academy. The Lady Generals defeated Tiftarea 50-35 on the strength of a 17-point performance by Morgan Sykes. Hallie Garrett chipped in with 11 points to move the Generals to their first win of the day. The boys team edged out their opponent 59-48. Jake Elliot scored 23 points, as he and Christian Wisenbaker (12 points) single-handedly scored over half the Generals points.

At Valdosta High, the Wildcats faced the Brooks County Trojans. The Wildcats defeated the Trojans 78-33, holding them to only 6 points in the second half.

“It was a good performance. Our defense really played great in the second half. More than likely, when our defense plays at this level, we will be all right,” said Haynes.

Lewis led the team with 24 points, followed by McGee and Barrett scoring 9 and 8 points respectively.

Carter led the team with 8 rebounds, while Anthony Smith pulled down 7.

The Wildcats moved to 4-0 on the season with the two weekend wins. They will play Cook once again on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Valdosta High School’s gym.
