Based on an outstanding sophomore season in 2012-13, the Gulf South Conference have taken notice of Kourtnee Williams and have chosen the Blazer guard as a member of the GSC Women's Basketball Preseason All-GSC Team. In the preseason poll, which is voted on by coaches throughout the conference, the Lady Blazers have also been projected to be one of the top three teams in the league.
The results of the preseason poll showed the Lady Blazers with 36 points, consisting of six third place votes and one second place vote. Valdosta State came in just behind Alabama-Huntsville, who received 41 points. Votes for the Chargers were varied, as they earned one fourth place vote, one third place vote, three second place votes, and two first place votes.
With six first place votes and one second place vote, Delta State claimed the top spot in the poll. West Georgia was picked to finish fourth, followed by West Alabama in the fifth position, North Alabama in the sixth spot, and West Florida and Christian Brothers coming in at seven and eight, respectively.
For Williams, the honor marks the Lady Blazer point guard's first selection to the Preseason All-GSC Team. The junior from Lyons, Ga. enters the upcoming season after a breakout year in 2012-13 in which she led the team in multiple categories including assists (83) and steals (77), while averaging 13.6 points per game.
Williams joined Alabama-Huntsville's Jasmine Hammon and Delta State's Rhandi Ball as one of the top three vote recipients in the poll.
Practice for the Lady Blazers begins next week, as Valdosta State prepares to improve on a 16-11 finish in 2012-13. The season kicks off at home on Monday, November 11, when the Lady Blazers host Trinity Baptist at 6 p.m. at the VSU Complex.
