Trojan receiver Deric Herring, a ‘playmaker’ on the turf

QUITMAN — The Brooks County Trojans offense has been rolling on all cylinders in the GHSA Class 2-A playoffs, scoring 50 plus points in their first two games, and 42 in their latest victory over Bowden on Friday. With an offense that lethal, there are bound to be many weapons on the team.

The Trojans turn to their gem on offense, receiver Deric Herring, when they need a big play through the air. Herring grabbed two touchdown catches last week in the Trojans win, and added another the week before as he has torched defenses in one-on-one coverage.

“I’m glad we won. I love helping the team out in anyway possible,” said Herring in reference to the Trojans win against Bowden.

Herring was born to Deric Herring, Sr. and Tonja Johnson in Quitman and has been a resident of Brooks County since birth.

Growing up, Herring began playing football at the age of 8. Herring has played the wide receiver position, running back, tight end and corner back through his football career, but has a distinct love for playing wide receiver.

“I love playing receiver way better than defensive back. I like making people run with me, and beating them on coverage,” said Herring.

He played football for Brooks Middle and enrolled at Brooks High as a freshman. Herring played slot receiver for the Trojan varsity team as a freshman. While he did not start, he did receive significant playing time.

Herring proved to coaches that he could handle more responsibility and that is what they gave him.

As a sophomore, Herring was promoted to a starting receiver and was also asked to play defensive back. Herring was solid in both roles, and continued to start in both positions even up until now. In addition to playing defensive back and wide receiver, Herring is the teams kicker on kick offs.

With 4.41 speed, Herring easily is one of the fastest players on the Brooks County roster. In the playoffs alone, Herring has been open down field on six plays, and quarterback Malkom Parrish has found him four of those times, with three going for touchdowns.

Standing a modest 5’9, 160 lbs., Herring is still able to out jump defensive backs for better position on the ball.

A senior, Herring has received offers to play wide receiver at Marshall and Troy, but has not yet made a decision on where to attend at this time. He does know however that he would like to play slot receiver for whatever school he does choose.

He currently has a 3.0 GPA and is apart of SKILLS, a club to help prepare students for the work force.

His favorite NFL football team is the Philadelphia Eagles, and includes his favorite NFL player, DeSean Jackson.

“I like them a lot because of DeSean Jackson. He reminds me of myself. He plays with a lot of swagger,” said Herring.

Herring’s favorite college team is the Florida State Seminoles.

“They (Florida State) are close to where I live, and they play football a lot like Brooks County,” said Herring.

His Trojan teammates describe him as the “hypeman” of the team.

“I always am trying to get the team going. I’m full of energy,” said Herring.

In addition to the “hypeman”, his Trojan teammates also call him “the playmaker” because his ability to make a big play.

His relationship with teammates is a good one, but none comes close to the bond he shares with the Trojans quarterback Parrish.

“Malkom Parrish is like my brother. It’s very competitive playing with him. We are always challenging each other to make each other better. We never take a day off on competing with one another,” said Herirng.

Something Herring mentioned that most people would not know is that fact that he enjoys going fishing with his football coaches.

You can watch Deric Herring and the rest of his Trojan teammates take on the Lovett Lions in Atlanta Friday Dec. 6 at 7:30 at Kilpatrick Stadium.
