Second suspect in arson arrested

VALDOSTA — A second arrest has been made in connection to the fire at the Troup Street business where a young man was shot and killed Sunday.

Lee Walter McKinney, 46, of Valdosta was arrested by the Valdosta Police Department, according to Cmdr. Brian Childress, and charged with arson. Earlier this week, Travon Johnson, 23, was arrested and charged with felony arson, according to Childress.

The business, T&D Snack & Fashion, was the site of a deadly shooting Sunday morning that took the life of Alfred Pierre Bradley, Jr., 24. Three men were arrested this week on charges in connection with Bradley’s death.

A community rally was held outside the business at 1401 N. Troup St. Monday morning to call for peace, yet early the next morning, the business was set ablaze.

Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice said firefighters responded to the call at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. He stated that the back of the building was doused with a flammable liquid, and an incendiary device, similar to a Molotov cocktail, was thrown through a window, setting a fire.

Rice estimated that less than $10,000 in damage was done to the property.

Childress said the arson is apparently a retaliation for the shooting Sunday, and the arson and homicide investigations are ongoing. Additional arrests may be forthcoming, he said, and the police department is sending a warning to the community.

“Any retaliation from either of these two incidents will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Childress said.
