VALDOSTA — More than 40 churches, nonprofit and civic organizations are gathering on Christmas Eve for the 15th year in a row for Feed the Needy.

According to Rev. J.D. Martin of King Solomon Baptist Church, this is the largest program in Georgia on Christmas Eve.

“It's something that brings together 40 churches and community leaders and people from all walks of life,” said Martin.

Last year alone, 3,250 people were served hot meals and 5,000 articles of clothing were given away and over 900 toys found homes.

“In the 15 years that we've been doing this, we've given over 46,000 meals, we've given 16,000 toys, and we've given over 56,000 articles of clothing,” said Martin.

2010 was the event's largest year, as they fed more than 6,000 people. This year, they are looking to feed roughly 3,000.

Volunteers are needed to help with this event.

"We need volunteers to help sort and put away clothes and to deliver meals," said Martin.

Martin is also seeking people with grills and those who can help cook the food.

To request a dinner or learn more about volunteering, call Martin at (229) 292-8979 or (229) 740-0643. Those requesting dinners should provide their name, address and phone number.

"If they need counseling, they can also call those numbers," said Martin.

Feed the Needy will take place on Monday, Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 613 West Savannah Street.
