At their meeting Thursday night, the Valdosta City Council voted to approve an Intergovernmental Agreement for SPLOST VII. The agreement, reached between Lowndes County and the five cites located therein —Valdosta, Dasher, Lake Park, Hahira, and Remerton — outlines the distribution of SPLOST VII funds that would occur should SPLOST VII get voted in this November.
The distribution breaks down as follows: Lowndes County, 41.61 percent of collected funds; Valdosta, 53.35 percent; Hahira, 2.51 percent; Remerton, 1.03 percent, Dasher, 0.83 percent, Lake Park, 0.67 percent.
The council voted to amend the City's retirement plan, with the changes to affect anyone hired or rehired on or after September 1, 2013. The changes include: no longer crediting prior government service as counting towards retirement; exchanging the prior “Rule of 75” (age plus time at the job equaling the age you could retire at with pension) for a “Rule of 80”; discontinuing use of the modified disability eligibility criteria; providing that Class One participants qualifying under the “Rule of 75” will not receive a refund of contributions made on or after September 1, 2013.
The council also:
•Authorized the Valdosta Fire Department to apply for a SAFER grant to hire 12 full-time firefighters.
•Approved the winning bid of $28,133 from Langdale Ford for a Ford F-120 Pickup Truck for use of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Regional Crime Lab.
•Praised local first-responders for their efforts concerning the Perma-Fix fire last Wednesday.
