Youngsters fill Little Actors cast

VALDOSTA — Not only are the aliens coming to Little Actors Theatre’s latest show this weekend, but so are the young performers.

For the past 10 years, Diane Tovar has directed LAT which is theatre for children by children. So, for two shows each year, for six weeks of rehearsal or more for each production, she regularly works with youngsters. Yet, for “The Aliens Are Coming! The Aliens Are Coming!” Tovar has her youngest cast ever.

They range in age from 5 to 15, but most are 9, 10, 11 years old, and new to LAT. Tovar says she lost most of her older, long-time cast members to high school drama this year.

This young cast

appeared to be having fun Tuesday afternoon during rehearsal. They play characters in a spoof of 1950s space-invader movies. Playwright Tim Kelly’s comic script takes audiences on a tour of a community dealing with a pending invasion.

Meanwhile, Tovar continues looking for a place where Little Actors Theatre cannot only invade but settle. LAT performs its shows on the Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center stage, but it needs a regular headquarters. It has been rehearsing in area churches for the past few years since moving out of its one-time HQ on North Patterson Street. Tovar is ready for Little Actors to have a home again.

Home or not, Tovar has no plans to step away from Little Actors Theatre. With 10 years and going, she will continue directing the young theatre troupe, though she does have one wish. She hopes one day to hand the reins to a former LAT student, one who has grown up and still has a love for theatre.
