Lieutenant Earl Durrance has served the Valdosta Police Department for over 25 years, and was among the first responders to a train accident that happened on Oct. 10 of this year. For his actions, the City of Valdosta, recognized Lt. Durrance as Employee of the Month at the council meeting Thursday night.
Along with the honor of employee of the month, the City gives a check in the amount of $200 to the recipient. In a gesture of selflessness, Durrance signed his $200 check over to the victim’s family for Christmas.
The accident occurred when the young man attempted to crawl underneath a train which was stopped on the track, dragging his bicycle with him.
Once the boy was underneath the train, it began to move, and one of the wheels ran over his leg, which had to be amputated.
Durrance was the first on the scene and rendered medical assistance to the teen until medical crews arrived. The teen, who is still recovering, and his mother attended the meeting Thursday to thank Durrance for his act of kindness, with not a dry eye left in the room after the presentation.
