Six jailed after crime ring broken

VALDOSTA — Six people are in jail after a shoplifting incident led to the break-up of a shoplifting and meth production ring.

Monday evening, investigators with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on Norman Drive after one of the vehicle’s occupants, Rachel Durgin, 26, allegedly left a nearby business without paying for merchandise.

While speaking with Durgin, investigators discovered a quantity of methamphetamine and other narcotics commonly used for the production of meth in the vehicle. Investigators stated they also found items that had been stolen in a Brooks County burglary that had not been reported at the time.

The information obtained from the traffic stop led investigators to a residence on Porter Road in Lake Park where additional stolen property was discovered Tuesday. Investigators also found a quantity of methamphetamine, items used to manufacture meth and firearms. Stony Gaskins, 41, and Judy Lynn Wetherington, 41, were placed under arrest at the residence, according to reports.

Investigators also conducted a search at a South Sherwood Drive residence that led to the discovery of methamphetamine and items used to manufacture meth. Brandon Spires, 22, James Delk Jr., 33, and Sarah Deloach, 29, were arrested at the scene, stated deputies.

All six individuals were taken to the Lowndes County Jail and have appeared in magistrate court for arraignment hearings where bond was considered. According to the LCSO:

• Durgin was charged with shoplifting, possession of methamphetamine and violating the Georgia Controlled Substance Act. Her bail was set at $12,500.

• Deloach was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of substances used for the manufacture of meth. Her bail was set at $15,000.

• Spires was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of substances used for the manufacture of meth and obstruction of an officer. His bail was set at $20,000.

• Delk was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of substances used for the manufacture of meth and probation violation.

•Wetherington was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of tools used for the commission of a crime and probation violation.

• Gaskins was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of substances used for the manufacture of meth and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

• Delk, Wetherington and Gaskins are not bailable, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators are continuing to work with the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office regarding the recovery of property. Sheriff Chris Prine is asking anyone with information about the case to call (229) 671-2950.
