Two shootings in Valdosta

One dead, one injured in unrelated incidents

VALDOSTA — At approximately 10 p.m. Friday, Valdosta police officers were called to the scene of a shooting at 1507 N. Ashley St., suite B.

The male victim, Kanwaljit Spai, 62, was an employee of Ashley Beauty Supply. According to Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress, “It appears that he was preparing to close the business and that this was a robbery. He was apparently shot during the robbery and killed.”

VPD detectives, Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson and police crime scene technicians converged on the scene, and Childress said although a specific suspect has not yet been identified, they are following up on leads in the case.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and we have reason to believe this business may have been specifically targeted,” Childress said.

In a separate incident Saturday afternoon, Childress said an 18-year-old male reported that he was walking down Webster Street where a vehicle drove by and someone shot him.

He was taken to South Georgia Medical Center with a gunshot wound in the lower chest area, but the wound is not life threatening.

Childress said that the victim is not cooperating with police, who have been unable to verify his account of the shooting or locate a crime scene. He added that there is no reason to believe the incident was connected in any way to the Friday night robbery.
