VALDOSTA — Valdosta police have made an arrest in connection with a burglary and arson that destroyed the home of a Moody Air Force Base airman.

Charles Hawkins, 24, of Valdosta was arrested Friday on two outstanding arrest warrants; these warrants charge him with burglary and arson in the first degree stemming from a fire that destroyed a house at 2418 Deborah Drive on Sept. 9, according to Valdosta Police Department reports.

The residence was home to a Moody airman who was out of town for the weekend.

During the investigation of the incident, authorities identified a suspect.

On Friday, officers spotted the suspect riding a bicycle in the Deborah Drive and Pineview Drive area; he was ordered to stop. The suspect refused to comply with orders but then got off the bicycle and fled on foot from officers.

He was apprehended along the 2400 block of North Forrest Street on the two outstanding warrants along with a charge of obstruction of an officer, the VPD reports.

Hawkins was being held Monday at the Lowndes County Jail awaiting court proceedings.
