The Moving Wall coming to Adel

ADEL — For the last year and a half, a small committee in Cook County has been raising money to bring the Wall here. On Wednesday, it arrives.

“It’s become a labor of love,” said Linda Meadows, a retired history teacher who has served on the committee. “We’re trying to offer the opportunity for the public to see just how important this war was to our generation.”

A big impetus for the committee’s efforts are the 14 names on the wall that are from this area.

“They’re people who lived in our community. They played football on our fields, walked through the halls of our high schools.”

The Wall will arrive on Wednesday and will be assembled on Thursday at the Welcome Center off of Exit 39 in Adel, after which it will be open to the public at noon.

The Wall will be open to the public around the clock, except for the evening of September 29. Then, the Wall will be closed to everyone except Vietnam Veterans and their guests “for a time of private reflection.”

An opening ceremony will be held on Friday morning at 10 a.m. While many people have come forward to volunteer to help with The Wall, the committee can make use of anyone who’s willing to give of their time.

“It can be as simple as holding someone’s hand and helping them do a rubbing, as simple as going with someone to the wall. The emotional needs of these veterans are going to be astronomical.”

The Vietnam Moving Wall will be at the Welcome Center off of Exit 39 in Adel from noon on September 26 through noon on September 30.

Interested volunteers can contact Linda Meadows at (229) 896-3591, Pam Fuller at (229) 896-4088 or at the groups Facebook page, The Moving Wall—Cook County, Georgia.
