VALDOSTA — Most neighbors knew Don Lineberger as a quiet man who kept to himself, but he was a man who knew how to make a banjo sing with bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, country star Glen Campbell, and even comedian Steve Martin.

Lineberger, 71, of Valdosta died Sunday night after being pulled from a Newbern Street house fire, said Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson.

Lineberger died as emergency-medical personnel attempted to revive him on the way to the hospital, Watson said. Smoke inhalation is considered the initial cause of death, but Watson was trying Tuesday to arrange an autopsy to establish an official cause of death.

The Valdosta Fire Department received a call at about 7 p.m. Sunday of a house fire at 2208 Newbern Drive, said Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice. Firefighters found a house engulfed in flames.
