National Day of Prayer

Churches pray for community, nation

VALDOSTA — While politicians and pundits seek policies to soothe the country’s aches at each level of government, Lowdnes-area ministries have invited members of the community to join in a series of prayers which they believe will help heal the wounds of the entire world with the National Day of Prayer.

Locally scheduled for noon Thursday, in front of the Lowndes County Courthouse, the hour-long ceremony will feature prayers for various aspects of our community and country, such as our schools and military personnel, and will commence and conclude with a song, said Pastor Wayne Hughes of Abundant Life Church of God.

“We believe in the power of prayer and we believe it important to ask of God to give strength and wisdom to all of us in this country,” said Hughes.

Though communities around the country have observed the Day of Prayer since its inception in 1952, it has long been a time that the masses turned to God, said Brinson Barker of the Christian Ministries Network and associate pastor at New Covenant Church. CMN will coordinate Lowndes County’s National Day of Prayer event for the fourth year and it hopes the ceremony will both unite and transform the community, Brinson said.

“Without God’s blessings, we don’t have the hope needed to proceed forward,” said Barker. “History proves that over the years, people often move away from prayer and begin to rely on their own human efforts. But eventually, they fall and then come back to the Lord because they realize He brought them that success and prosperity that they desire.”

The National Day of Prayer observance ceremony will be free and open to the public, according to Hughes and Barker who encourage individuals of all faith to join in Thursday’s unification event. For more information, visit
