Firefighters save Lake Park man’s classic cars

LAKE PARK — Fast action saved a Lake Park man’s workshop where he restores fast-moving vintage cars.

Stan Shannon was working in the garage of his 4903 Crestwood Drive SE workshop at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday when he heard an explosion, he said. Outside, he discovered fire coming from the workshop’s air-conditioning unit.

He stayed out of the workshop which is a short distance from the main house on his property off of one of Lake Park’s namesake bodies of water. He called 911. Lake Park and Lowndes County firefighters arrived within a few minutes of his call.

Firefighters contained the blaze and smoke damage to the house-like workshop’s second floor, said Lowndes County Fire Chief Richard Guyton.

One firefighter’s leg went through flooring outside of the workshop. Dispatchers sent an emergency-medical crew for the firefighter but he was not injured, Guyton said. No one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished in a short period of time.

Guyton praised Shannon for getting out of the workshop, staying out and calling 911 from outside of the burning structure.

“People should always get out of a burning house before calling 911,” Guyton said. “Get out of the house and stay out. Call 911 from a cell phone or a neighbor’s house. And don’t try putting out the fire yourself. Wait for the fire department.”

Shannon praised the firefighters. “I’m very happy with them,” he said of the fire departments’ response time.

Though he didn’t know the extent of the damage to the workshop’s second floor, saying only it had been “gutted,” Shannon stood in the garage, pleased that his 1955 MGA and his MGB were not damaged by fire, smoke or water.

He has owned the MGA since 1963. Made by the MG division of the British Motor Corporation, the car was made from 1955 through 1962. This is the third time that Shannon has restored the vehicle.
