'Addams Family' coming to Valdosta

VALDOSTA — They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and come November, the Addams Family comes to Valdosta as part of the 2013-14 Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts Presenter Series.

But getting it on the Presenter Series schedule took more than a simple, double snap of the fingers.

“The Addams Family” musical is a big production, a relatively new show from Broadway on national tour. It is the reason why there are three shows this Presenter Series season rather than the traditional four.

Nancy Warren, Presenter Series chair, says “The

Addams Family” is a show that should appeal to all generations of audiences. After all, the Addams Family has been popular since cartoonist Charles Addams’ series of macabre cartoons from the mid-20th century to the 1960s TV show to 1970s animated appearances to features film in the 1990s and continued interest in all of these Addams formats in the years since.

In 2010, “The Addams Family” musical opened on Broadway with Nathan Lane playing Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. The musical features all of the Addams regulars, such as Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, Pugsley, etc.

Though announced last, “The Addams Family” will be the second show of the season. In the past week, the arts center announced in The Times that the Broadway Boys will play Oct. 7, and the New Shanghai Circus will return on Feb. 14, 2014 to Valdosta. “The Addams Family” plays Nov. 14.

Until Sept. 6, patrons can purchase a season ticket for all three shows for $100, Warren says. Buying each ticket individually, at $45 per show, the early season ticket represents a $35 savings, and a $25 savings from the cost of season tickets after Sept. 6.

Warren believes “The Addams Family” will have the appeal of past big Presenter Series shows such as “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cats” and “Grease.” So people may want to get their tickets early, she says, if you’re going to make a call on the Addams Family.
