Valdosta Junior Woman’s Club honors Jennifer Steedley

VALDOSTA — Jennifer Steedley was named Woman of the Year Saturday, at the 56th Annual Woman of the Year Brunch.

For nearly six decades, the Woman of the Year award has served to highlight women in Valdosta who have given back to their community in great strides. Sponsored by the Valdosta Junior Woman’s Club, women are nominated by local clubs and organizations, and then voted on by women outside of the community. This year, four local women were nominated: Jennifer Steedley, Michelle Girtman, Tiffany Crowell and Emily Davenport. And when Jennifer Steedley took home the title, she insisted that she is no different from any of the other women who gathered Saturday.

“I don’t do anything differently than what everybody else in here does,” Steedley said, accepting the award on Saturday. “I’m a mother and a best friend. And I work for a great place, Valdosta City Schools.”

Steedley works as Valdosta City Schools director of public relations. Along with raising her two daughters, Sage and Reese, and her son, Jack, with her husband, Randy, Steedley, like all of the Woman of the Year nominees, spends a great deal of her time giving back to the community, working with Lowndes Youth Leadership League and serving on the board of directors for the Children’s Advocacy Center, as well as serving on the executive board of Sallas Mahone Elementary School PTO.

Nominated by the Valdosta Junior Service League, Steedley has served as co-chairwoman for the Merry Marketplace, one of the organization’s largest events, and was recently elected to serve as president-elect for the Service League for the 2013-2014 year.

“The nominees do far more than they talk about,” said Sandi Parrish, former president of the Valdosta Junior Woman’s Club. “And that encourages other women to get out and do good in the community.”

“A woman of the year has commitment, passion, vision, purpose, and instills hope in others,” said guest speaker Cathy Pipkin.“A woman of the year has a passion for things that very few women have a passion for. And we are all women of the year.”

“It’s just part of being a woman,” said Steedley. “I’m going to continue what I’ve been doing. I’m going to make you proud.”
