Shooting leaves one dead, two injured in Lanier County

-- —  A shooting in Lanier County over the weekend left one person dead and two hospitalized, according to the sheriff’s department.

At approximately 12:48 a.m. Saturday, the Lanier County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call indicating that three people had been shot at a residence off Ga. 125 in the western part of Lanier County, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.

Upon arrival, a deputy found that two people who live in the residence had been shot and a third was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One of the victims was taken to South Georgia Medical Center while the other was taken to facilities in Gainesville by helicopter, the release says.

Sheriff Nick Norton requested and received immediate assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the GBI, along with sheriff’s office investigators and uniformed patrol division deputies, began interviewing witnesses and canvassing the neighborhood for additional information while GBI crime scene technicians handled the forensic investigation, according to the press release.

The two victims were reported to be in serious but stable condition, the release says.

The person whom authorities believe shot the two victims was declared dead at the scene, according to the press release.

No names have been released at this time due to notification of family members and the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Norton said “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family members of the victims as they wait to see the outcome of this tragedy but we are all hoping and believing for full recovery for the victims. To the family of the deceased we extend our condolences and prayers as well.

“I would like to personally thank all the 911 center staff, the first responders from both Lanier and Berrien county, the life-flight crew, the staff at South Georgia Medical Center, our law enforcement brothers and sisters from Berrien and Lowndes Counties, the GBI and my staff. Incidents like this require everyone to do their absolute best and cooperate at the highest level possible and to a man and woman that is what I saw today.”
