Flag football returns to Valdosta State University this weekend for an annual fundraising event to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lowndes County.
Thirty-six teams from across the state will compete Friday through Sunday in the 20th Annual Shamrock Tournament presented by Kappa Delta sorority. The competition is divided into boys’ and girls’ brackets, and team members come from campus Greek organizations as well as local community groups.
“It’s the biggest philanthropy event on campus,” said Alexandria van Assendelft, one of the event’s organizers. “Last year, the event raised $20,000.”
Organizers have raised money for the event through team fees as well as corporate and alumni donations. The funds will benefit Prevent Child Abuse America, a national advocacy group, and will directly impact the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lowndes County, according to van Assendelft.
T-shirts and raffle tickets will be sold during the event, and an alumni tent will offer refreshments.
The tournament starts at 6 p.m. today at VSU and is expected to last through Sunday when the winning teams will be awarded trophies.
