The Valdosta Daily Times
The Valdosta Civitan Club honored three local ministers, Rev. Benny Daniels, the Rev. Terry Weber-Rodriguez and the Rev. Ismael Rodriguez. These ministers/assistants relayed some of their experiences as they served as chaplains while in military service. Each year, Civitan International designates February as Clergy Appreciation Month. This is a special time of appreciation for clergy of all faiths who serve their community.
This time is set aside in remembrance of four chaplains (one Catholic, one Jewish, and two Protestants) who served aboard the USAT Dorchester during World War II. As the ship was sinking, they gave their life jackets to four young men, making the ultimate sacrifice for those young men. It is told that the four chaplains were last seen arm-in-arm on the deck as the ship went down.
April is set aside as Civitan Awareness Month, recognizing Civitan as a whole and making people aware of Civitan.
