LAKE PARK —
At approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday when Kevin Johnson, general manager of the Sonny’s Bar-B-Q in Lake Park, walked through the kitchen, the lunch crowd had cleared and the crew was readying things for dinner.
That’s when Johnson saw the cooker doors burst open as though under pressure. Johnson took one look at the flames inside the cooker and the flames escaping and immediately evacuated everyone, getting them out to a safe distance and calling for help.
Firefighters with Lowndes County Fire Rescue responded, coming from stations three, two and 10.
There, they extinguished the flames and cleared out the smoke before starting their investigation.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” said Capt. Ken Carter of Lowndes County Fire Rescue. “It’s probably going to take us several more days to complete that ... Given the scope of everything, I’d say there’s minor damage, confined to the cooker. Of course, minor is a relative term.”
With the investigation ongoing and the cooker damaged, it may be a few days before the Lake Park Sonny’s Bar-B-Q is back up and running.
