South Georgia remembers veterans at Cleveland Field ceremony

VALDOSTA — Sunlight poured over Cleveland Field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium Monday morning for a Veterans Day Program with veterans and their families in attendance.

Combined Honor Guard consisting of Valdosta High School Navy JROTC and Lowndes High School Air Force JROTC began the ceremony with the Recognition of the Flag. Welcoming guests to the event was Phil Youngblood of American Legion Post 13, who served as the master of ceremonies during the program. All attendees then bowed their heads and covered their hearts as an invocation was led by Chaplain Bill MacLaughlin also of American Legion Post 13.

Speakers throughout the program included Valdosta Police Department Chief Brian Childress, Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, City of Valdosta Mayor John Gayle, Commander of American Legion Post 13 Ed Kent, and Chairman of Lowndes County Bill Slaughter.

All the speakers addressed the importance of never letting society forget about the sacrifices made by men and women for the sake of our country. They all sought to recognize past soldiers and future soldiers.

Patriotic music was performed by the Valdosta High School Band led by director Michael Thomas. Phil Youngblood then stood at the podium again to call out various military branches and recognize veterans from each. A ceremonial wreath laying was then performed by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 13 to honor all of their fallen brothers and sisters in service. A 21-gun salute by the Company C 61st Georgia Volunteers Reenactors closed the event and “Taps” was played by a trumpet player from Valdosta High School Band.

A lunch followed at the American Legion Post 13 for all the attendees. A birthday cake was also served in honor of the Marine Corps’ anniversary.
