Valdosta State Blazers athletics have been working with the community on various occasions in the month of August to give fans a chance to meet the players and coaches of their favorite VSU teams.
With September here, Blazer athletics continued to give back to the community by holding yet another “Meet the Blazers” event, this time for soccer.
“Meet the Blazers is a tradition for all the sports. Soccer has been able to do it for three years now. It's a good time for our players to be like a kid again, and to brighten the day of the youth,” said Blazer women’s soccer head coach Mel Heinz.
The event began at 6 p.m. and was open to children from kindergarten to eighth grade.
Free food and drinks were provided to the participants as they got to participate in soccer drills with the team. The event also provided free shirts for the kids who registered.
“We want soccer to grow as a sport in South Georgia. We want to get the community excited to not only come out and play soccer, but to support the team, too,” said Heinz.
The VSU women’s soccer team begins its season this weekend, hosting a series of games featuring North Georgia, Florida Southern and Florida Tech on Friday and Sunday. The Blazers play their first game 7 p.m. Friday at the VSU soccer field.
