Library concludes summer reading program

VALDOSTA — With school right around the corner, the South Georgia Regional Library wrapped up its Summer Reading Program Saturday. From 2-4 p.m. children were invited to the library to participate in a huge wrap-up celebration.

“It’s about having fun. It’s a family event that lets them come out and also showcase what the library has other than books,” explained Bernard Bulemu, assistant director of public services.

During the celebration, children of all ages were able to play in a bounce house and win door prizes. Representatives from Theta Sigma Sigma handed out snow cones and popcorn during the celebration to help the children keep cool.

There were presentations for adults as well as from the Lowndes County Historical Society showing pictures from Lowndes County as well as guest speaker Nancy Pafford, an author from Lanier County, speaking about Indian artifacts.

During the celebration, children’s entertainment was supplied by a Talking Book Library booth by Deborah Antonoff and a Dr. Magical Balloons’ balloon show by Dewayne Reynolds.

There was also a drawing for several prizes at the end of the reading program celebration.

Eric Mathis, South Georgia Regional Library reference librarian, said, “We are really wrapping up the theme of the program, which was ‘Dig Into Reading.’ So we are doing a lot of things on the past, whether local or worldwide. We are trying to encourage reading across the board, from the very young to the very old by providing interesting programs and hopefully encouraging them to read and explore more on their own as well."
