Another candidate withdraws

VALDOSTA — The ballot for the May 20 primary will include at least two names of candidates who are withdrawing from contention.

Donald Thieme joins a growing list of candidates who qualified but are no longer running for office. Thieme qualified for the Lowndes County District 3 Commission seat as Democrat, leaving Tom Hochschild as the only Democratic candidate in the race. Tally Mark Wisenbaker and Thomas Sims both qualified to run as Republicans, but Sims withdrew from the race early enough that his name will not appear on the ballot. However, due to the lateness of Thieme’s decision, the ballot will include his name as a candidate.

Thieme threw his support behind his fellow candidate and colleague at Valdosta State University, Hochschild, saying that he is convinced Hochschild shares his vision for the county.

“While I was very excited about my own candidacy, this is a very busy time in my personal and professional life and I am not prepared to sacrifice the time required to serve the county fully,” he wrote in a withdrawal letter.

Earlier this week, Lowndes County Commissioner Crawford Powell stated he is no longer seeking the District 174 seat currently held by Rep. Ellis Black, who is leaving the House to run for the state senate.

Deb Cox, Lowndes County elections supervisor, said Powell’s announcement is also too late to remove his name from the ballot. However, Cox stated that Powell had not officially withdrawn from the race as of Thursday afternoon.
