Home, Hobby & Outdoors Show celebrates crafters

VALDOSTA — At the Home, Hobby & Outdoors Show at the Rainwater Conference Center Saturday, guests watched live craft demonstrations, talked with vendors of everything from home-security systems to lawn décor and talked with fellow outdoor and hobby enthusiasts.

While this is only the second year using the title of Home, Hobby and Outdoors Show, this is the 13th year for the annual event, which was previously called the Home and Gardens Show for 11 years.

“Last year, we wanted to bring in the hobby and outdoor aspects of it,” said Jill Maine, show coordinator and planner. “(The change) opened up a lot of avenues we hadn't thought of.”

One such avenue is the recent rise in reclaiming and refurbishing old furniture and materials: turning wooden doors into headboards, card catalogues into spice racks, dresser drawers into bookshelves.

“The public wants to see that ... what goes into building a home isn't just about pools, patios, bricks and sticks.”

Each year, the Home Builders Association of South Georgia, which puts on the show, bases the event on a different theme. This year, it wanted to focus on local talent and made that a big feature for both days of the show, with local artists, decorators, and designers demonstrating craft projects and décor ideas.

One of those demonstrators, Lynn Trumm, has been in the furniture-revamping business for years with her store, The Sequel.

While there has always been a market for distressed and reclaimed furniture, the rise in recent years of photo-sharing websites like Pinterest and Instagram have expanded the market.

“Everyone goes to Etsy to get ideas ... Google for techniques,” said Trumm.
