Friends of the Library continue working the books

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — The Board of the Friends of the South Georgia Regional Library recently reviewed its work last year on behalf of the area public libraries.

During 2013, the Friends of the Library raised sufficient funds to purchase more than $28,000 worth of books, media and equipment and to fund several children’s programs for the South Georgia Regional Libraries. The Friends’ Back Door Book Store, now in its 18th year, has earned more than $95,000 during the past five years, selling used books at $1 for hardcovers and 50 cents for paperbacks.

“We were recycling before recycling was cool,” says Book Store manager Merrilee Casady. “Our customers buy our old used books at a bargain price, and we donate our earnings to the libraries for new books. It’s a win-win situation. Our bookstore is the best deal in town — well, next to the library, of course. Our store depends on donations of gently used books from the community, and we always need more clean books. The books can be dropped off at the loading dock at the rear of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library on Woodrow Wilson Drive any time the library is open, and the staff will be glad to give you a receipt for your tax-deductible donation.”

“Our library would be much poorer without our Friends,” said regional Library Director Kelly Lenz. “The funds they provide are definitely the icing on our cake. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the books and services they enjoy are supported by the Friends.”

Mary Helen Watson heads the slate of the 2014 officers for the Friends of the Library. Liza Newsom serves as vice president, Stefani Carroll as treasurer, John Swiderski as recording secretary, and Jan Feese as corresponding secretary. Kay Scott is the immediate past president. Other board members are Merrilee Casady, Robert DeVan, Anne Gunter, Patricia Marks, Elveta Miller, Cindy Robinson, Sarah Smart, Janet Toffolo, and Dot Young.

The board meets at 1 p.m. at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library on the second Tuesday of March, May, September and November. All meetings are open to anyone who has an interest in the activities of the FOL.

The Friends of the Library Back Door Book Store, located in the rear of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library on Woodrow Wilson Drive, is open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each Tuesday and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. each Saturday.
