Join the team and lose weight

Team Lean kickoff is Saturday

VALDOSTA — Starting an exercise program and losing weight are lofty goals many make at the beginning of each new year, but can be daunting if going it alone. You’re more likely to stick to your resolution if you enlist the help of others.

Team Lean offers you that opportunity, by providing the motivation, direction and support. Sponsored annually by the Valdosta YMCA in partnership with South Georgia Medical Center, the 10-week community weight loss competition is for ages 14 and up.

Kicking off on Saturday, Jan. 11, the program welcomes teams and individuals who will weigh in weekly and compete for cash prizes. But the program is more than just a competition, it’s hopefully the start of a new life.

“Our focus is on healthy weight loss, which is why the Y partners with SGMC. We want participants to lose weight in a healthy way but also to have fun while doing it,” said Larry Tobey, executive director of the YMCA.

Tobey said the ultimate goal is for participants to incorporate exercise into their daily routine and make it a lifelong habit.

“The program is nearly three months long, and by the end of that time, they will be accustomed to taking that time to exercise. They’ve learned to adjust their lifestyles and become consistent exercisers,” Tobey said.

The cost per person is $50 and you don’t have to be a member of the YMCA to participate in Team Lean. Weight loss is tracked individually and by team every week, and are conducted at SGMC and at both YMCA locations, on Gornto Road in Valdosta and on Mill Store Road in Lake Park.

The final day to register is Thursday, Jan. 16 and the final weigh-in is Thursday, March 27, with the award celebration on Thursday, April 3.

Motivation and encouragement from others, along with learning to develop new habits, are all key to becoming healthier through exercise and weight loss. The goal for the Team Lean program this year is for a cumulative community weight loss of 10,000 pounds.
