Approaching their 20th anniversary, Jimmy and Danita Boyd took a walk down memory lane and came back with a new play.
Written with fellow playwrights Tania Brown and Taurence Phillips, the Boyds have written “It’s All Good,” their latest play set to open Friday, July 12, at Mathis City Auditorium.
“We loosely based this play on our lives. It is sprinkled with some truths,” Jimmy Boyd says referring to his and Danita’s 20th anniversary which falls on July 13, a day after the play’s opening. “... We try to look at everything, the good, the bad and the ugly ...”
But the play culminates with an inspirational message found in the title.
Boyd shares a personal experience of losing his job several years ago. At the time, it seemed like the worst thing possible. Instead, losing his job created the opportunity for him to become an entrepreneur — opening two stores and operating a transportation company.
“Looking back, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me,” Boyd says. “... If I hadn’t lost my job that would have never happened so, you see, it’s all good.”
“It’s All Good” represents the Valdosta playwriting team’s first romantic comedy. Under their VOICE Productions, the Boyds and Brown have also written the plays “Another Man’s Shoes,” “Let Go, Let God,” and “Serenity.” These shows used drama, comedy and music to focus on issues and deliver inspirational messages. All three shows also premiered in Valdosta, with some performances being part of tours. Jimmy Boyd hopes to take “It’s All Good” on a tour of a few regional cities at a later date.
As with past shows, the new one has a script but VOICE Productions uses area performers ready to ad-lib for each performance. There are rehearsals, but Boyd says he likes the spontaneity that comes from new lines being introduced.
“That’s the way we like it and we feel that the crowd dictates certain things,” he says. “We have rehearsals but we want to give the performers the leeway of being impromptu.”
Phillips has been a regular performer in past VOICE productions. This time, he became one of the playwrights for “It’s All Good,” as well as offering musical ideas. Boyd says this show offers a variety of music from jazz to gospel to “the soul-stirring” and “the upbeat.”
“There’s strong singing in this show,” Boyd says. “Some of the strongest singing we’ve ever had in a show.”
