Mysterious, unsigned letter under investigation

HAHIRA —  A letter claiming to be sent from the Lowndes County Democratic Party disparaging a local mayoral candidate has been turned over to inspectors with the United States Postal Service.

Copies of the letter were mailed to an unknown number of Hahira residents last week and accused mayoral candidate Rose Adams of mismanaging funds and skipping mandatory training as a Hahira City Council member.

The Times obtained a copy of one of the letters from Adams. The letter is not signed and does not contain any information concerning who wrote it or who sent it. The envelope it was mailed in does show “LCDP” and the post office box number for the Lowndes County Democratic Party as the return address.

“That is definitely not our letter. Any letter that we write, we sign our name to,” said Gretchen Quarterman, chairman of the Lowndes County Democratic Party.

Adams called Quarterman last week to ask her about the letter.

“I met up with [Adams] Friday for coffee, and she gave me a copy of the letter and the envelope, and I took it to the board of elections, and they made a copy of it,” said Quarterman.

Quarterman also made a complaint with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office where she was referred to the United States Postal Service. At this time, the Sheriff’s Office is not investigating the matter.

Adams has written rebuttals to the accusations found in the letter and plans to email them to her supporters.

“The truth will come out after the proper authorities have looked at it. Our citizens deserve the truth,” said Adams.
