VALDOSTA — A man was shot to death Tuesday evening outside of a Valdosta convenience store, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, the man was shot in the parking lot of Gordon's Food Mart, 209 W. Gordon St., on the corner of Oak and Gordon, said Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress.

The man's identity had not been released Tuesday night as of deadline. He was pronounced dead at South Georgia Medical Center, authorities said.

The police chief said investigators have a person of interest in the case, but no arrests had been made as of deadline.

Childress described the nature of the case as a murder investigation.

Numerous Valdosta police vehicles responded to the scene of the longtime Gordon Street

business. The parking lot was cordoned off with yellow police tape while onlookers gathered in an adjoining Oak Street parking lot. Investigators and crime-lab technicians gathered evidence. Witnesses were interviewed.

Police also patrolled the region around the store, which is a only a few blocks south of the Valdosta State University campus. VSU police vehicles were also heavily patrolling the area in the moments after the Tuesday evening incident.

A short time after the shooting, authorities also gathered in the nearby VSU University Center parking lot where they appeared to question two men. No official word if this scenario was related to the Gordon Street shooting.
