Awards presented at Boys & Girls Club meeting

-- — The Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta celebrated many accomplishments at the annual board meeting Tuesday at the downtown facilities.

Early each year, the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta holds the meeting to recap the previous year by highlighting programs and events that contributed to the success of the organization.

The meeting is also a time where the new board members are inducted and awards are presented to recognize supporters of the Club who have shown notable commitment.

Donnie Thomas, who has coached at the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta for the last 30 years, was presented with Old Reliable Award for his community involvement with the Club. Thomas helped coach the first Boys & Girls Club baseball team to win a state championship in the 13-14 year old age division.

The Extra Mile Award was presented to Dr. David Monetti, a professor of educational psychology at Valdosta State University, for assisting with facilitation and management of the Club’s educational programs.

The Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta presented Susan Steel with the 2013 Woman of the Year Award and David S. Waller Sr. with the 2013 Man of the Year Award.

These awards are given to individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution of time and resources to the Club. Steel has been loyal supporter of the organization for many years and is also a board officer as the Chairman of Development. Waller has been serving the children of the community and the Boys & Girls Club for more than 40 years.

The Jeremiah Milbank Society awarded Laura Perlman, David S. Waller Sr., and Gloria Boyette, representing the Boyette Family, for their support to the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta.

The Jeremiah Milbank Society is designed to encourage and promote individual giving to local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Jim Wink, chief professional officer and president of the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta, said, “After being with this Club for a short period of time, this annual meeting is an exciting time for me, as I have the pleasure of continuing this journey with a community and a group of people and that I admire and respect greatly.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta would like to thank those who made 2013 a successful year for over 2,000 Club members.Without support from the Board of Directors and community, the Club would not be able to improve the lives of children and families in Valdosta.
