VALDOSTA — The Valdosta High School Debate Team competed at the GFCA Novice State Championship in Speech and Debate, Feb. 7-8, at Lassiter High School, Marietta.

Twenty-two VHS students qualified for the state tournament, several qualifying in more than one event.

Seventeen 'Cats competed in the two-day tournament against the best novice speakers in the state.

Sophomore Lorna Chitty (sixth speaker) and senior Spencer Leff (fourth speaker) were recognized as being in the top 10 speakers for first-year Lincoln-Douglas Debate. They were in an elite group of debaters that ended the tournament with winning records after the six preliminary rounds of debate.

Several students received trophies for their efforts: Leff advanced to quarterfinals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Senior Reed Bailey placed sixth in extemporaneous speaking.

Sophomore Nasier Vazquez placed fifth in extemporaneous speaking and fourth in original oratory. Junior Devonta Cowart, with his original oratory, “Gold Chains, No Brains,” is the runner-up for the state championship in original oratory.
